Canggu: where the rice paddies meet the surf
Morning surf, all-day brunch, and a beer in the sand as the sun drops.
Canggu is the noisy, younger cousin to my calm Ubud base, and I loved it for exactly that. Where Ubud is rice-field mornings and a floating breakfast, Canggu is a coffee after a surf, a long brunch, and a beanbag on the sand by sunset. It's a quick drive down from Ubud, so I'd treat it as the coastal half of a Bali trip rather than a choice between the two. Here's exactly how I'd spend a few days.
- Bali's surf-and-cafe coast, younger and livelier than Ubud
- Beginner-friendly surf at Batu Bolong & Echo Beach
- An easy drive down from Ubud for the beach half of a trip
Best things to do
A first surf at Batu Bolong
The gentle, mellow break where half of Canggu learns to surf. Rent a board or grab a morning lesson, then warm up with a coffee at the cafes right behind the sand.
Sunset beanbag at Echo Beach
Grab a beanbag on the sand, order a cold Bintang, and watch the surfers in the last light. Echo Beach is rockier than it is swimmable, so come for the sunset rather than a big swim.
Brunch your way down the cafe strip
Canggu does cafe culture better than anywhere I've been. Smoothie bowls, proper coffee, slow mornings; just wander Batu Bolong and pick whichever spot looks busy.
Scooter out to the rice paddies
Five minutes off the main strip the rice fields take over again. There's a famous shortcut path through them; go early, take it slow, and you get the green calm without leaving the coast.
Where to stay
Getting there & around
Fly into Denpasar (Ngurah Rai) airport, then it's roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car or Grab up to Canggu, depending on traffic. If you're coming from Ubud like I did, it's about 1.5 hours by private driver. Once you're here, Canggu is made for scooters and most people get around on one, but the main lanes get genuinely busy and chaotic, so only ride if you're confident and always wear a helmet. If you'd rather not, Grab and Gojek work for short hops, and a lot of the cafe strip is walkable.
Eat & drink
- A Batu Bolong cafe — The smoothie-bowl-and-flat-white spots the whole town runs on. Pick a busy one on the strip; you can't really go wrong with brunch here.
- A local warung — My budget move, same as Ubud: nasi campur and a fresh juice for next to nothing. Tucked just off the main road, where the food's honest and the bill is tiny.

Frequently asked
Should I base in Canggu or Ubud?
Honestly, do both. Ubud is the green, calm cultural base I'd pick first; Canggu is the livelier coast for surf, cafes and sunsets. I'd split a Bali trip between the two rather than choose, with a private driver for the run between them.
Is Canggu good for beginner surfers?
Yes, that's a big part of why people come. Batu Bolong is a mellow, forgiving break that's perfect for a first lesson, and there are boards to rent and instructors everywhere. Echo Beach is a bit more advanced, so start at Batu Bolong.
